Phuket Shopping Guide
|
|
With its diverse selection of shopping
venues and merchandise,
Phuket is a shopper’s paradise,
catering to every budget, taste
and need. From the roadside stalls
hawking fake Gucci sunglasses
by the tourist beaches, to the exclusive
antique and art galleries of
Phuket’s “Old Town”, there really is
something for everyone. |
| |
Clothes |
| |
|
|
Clothing is one of the most popular
products sought out by visitors to the
island. Cheap replicas of famous, catwalk
fashion names are available in
every tourist town and beachside. For a
better quality and genuine article, head
along to some of the large shopping
centres; although prices are a fair bit
higher than their roadside counterparts,
prices are generally cheaper than in
western countries. |

Tailoring |
| |
If it is custom made suits and dresses
you’re looking for, you won’t need to
look too hard. All of the main tourist areas
are well stocked with experienced
tailors and a wide range of fabrics to
choose from. Prices for custom made
suits will depend upon the style and
fabric, but are far cheaper than the
equivalent services in Europe or North
America. It is good to remember however,
that a tailor made suit takes time,
so if you’re planning on investing in that
‘perfect fit’, then visit your tailor early
on in your holiday. We can recommend

Textiles |
| |
|
|
Thai silk is the most popular textile
bought by visitors, and it is available
all over the island, in many shapes and
forms and of varying quality. Generally,
the silk items on sale at the beachside
stalls are of lower quality; for the better
silk, it is best to head into the department
stores. |
| |
The art of ‘batik’ has been perfected in
the southern regions of Thailand and is
famous for its bright, vibrant designs,
often depicting the surrounding nature.
Cotton is also gaining in popularity,
especially the items produced by the
villagers who use only natural dyes.
There are shops offering a wide array of
fabrics, sold by the metre, along Talang
Road in Phuket Town. |

Paintings |
| |
There are many small galleries, some
with very fine and skillful copies of famous
paintings. However, if you are
looking for original art, you will have to
look a little further, but the rewards will
be worth it. There are several galleries
in Phuket Town, dotted throughout the
‘Old Town’ area, showing original art and
paintings, which are well worth checking
out. The Rawai area also boasts
several galleries with original works by
local artists, some of which have a very
distinctive style of their own. |
